What it calculates
It converts letter grades and credit hours into a weighted grade point average on the 4.0 scale.
Why it matters
GPA is used for scholarships, graduate admissions and many graduate employers' screening filters.
Who it's for
High-school and university students tracking academic standing, and advisors projecting outcomes.
Formula
- gᵢ
- Grade points for course i
- cᵢ
- Credit hours for course i
Worked example
Three courses
- 1A (4.0) × 3 credits = 12
- 2B (3.0) × 4 credits = 12
- 3C (2.0) × 3 credits = 6
(12 + 12 + 6) ÷ 10 credits = GPA 3.00
How the gpa calculator works
GPA = Σ(gᵢ × cᵢ) ÷ Σcᵢ. Credit hours weight the average, so a high-credit course moves your GPA much more than a one-credit elective.
Each letter grade maps to a point value on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), weighted by the credit hours of the course.
Heavier courses move your average more, which is why a low grade in a 4-credit class costs more than the same grade in a 1-credit elective.
Common mistakes
- Averaging grade points without weighting by credits.
- Mixing weighted (5.0 AP/honors) and unweighted scales in the same calculation.
- Including pass/fail courses that carry no grade points.
Tips and best practice
- Prioritize effort on high-credit courses — they dominate the weighted average.
- Check whether your institution counts plus/minus grades (3.3, 3.7).
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by total credit hours.
What is a good GPA?
3.0 is usually considered solid, 3.5+ competitive for graduate programs, and 3.8+ strong for selective scholarships.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted caps at 4.0; weighted scales award up to 5.0 for advanced courses.
Can I raise a low GPA?
Yes, but the effect dilutes as total credits grow — later grades move the average less.
